Zsolnay Család- és Gyártörténeti Kiállítás

In the former residence of the Zsolnay family: the famous Pécs ceramics factory and the family’s history spanning one and a half centuries.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 2,500

About the museum

The exhibition presents the history of the Zsolnay family and the factory over the past one and a half centuries. The factory’s history is linked to important stations of Hungarian history: it was founded in the Bach era, flourished in the age of dualism, and the First World War and the peace treaties broke its development. The interwar period was a time of restart and modernisation. Nationalisation marked a further turning point, followed by a period of artistic and technical experiments aimed at reviving traditions.

The exhibition also recalls the family members: the brilliant ceramicist Zsolnay Vilmos, his son Zsolnay Miklós, who as a businessman ensured that the factory remained in family ownership, Zsolnay Júlia, Zsolnay Teréz and Júlia’s husband, Sikorski Tádé. At the turn of the century the factory was the largest ceramics factory of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Among Zsolnay Vilmos’s inventions, porcelain faience and the eosin technique brought world fame, while pyrogranite inspired Hungarian-style Art Nouveau (magyaros szecesszió).

The exhibition is housed in the family’s former residence; the former negotiation room and office on the ground floor served to receive visitors and customers coming to the factory.
