About the museum
The museum was created from a gift by the painter and film director Hamza D. Ákos and his wife, the fashion designer and journalist Hamza Lehel Mária. The couple returned home from Paris and then from Brazil, and settled in Jászberény in 1989. Hamza D. Ákos gave his collection of around two hundred paintings to Jászberény and the Jászság, and in 1991 Hamza Lehel Mária established a foundation to organise the collection into a museum.
Hamza D. Ákos died in 1993. The museum was set up in the couple's former house in Jászberény and opened in 1995. It is run by the Hamza Múzeum és Jász Galéria Közalapítvány (Hamza Museum and Jász Gallery Public Foundation). Nearly 200 paintings and some 400–600 fashion drawings are one of the important treasures of the public collections of the Jászság.
After the renovations, a new permanent exhibition titled Variációk két témára (Variations on Two Themes) opened on 15 July 2025, on the 30th anniversary of the museum's opening: the work of Hamza D. Ákos is shown in the back room and that of Hamza Lehel Mária in the middle room, and part of the material is exchanged every two to three months. Since the reopening in 2021, the permanent exhibition Kor-Társítások (Contemporary Associations) has presented the contemporary and non-contemporary art of the Jászság, mainly through works of the 21st century.
