About the museum
The idea of a museum in Jászberény arose in 1873, when the deputy captain (alkapitány) of the Jászkun District urged that the historical relics of the Jász people be placed in a worthy setting. The museum was opened on 26 December 1874, making it one of the earliest provincial museums in the country. In 1931 it moved into its permanent home, the single-storey building of 1842 built from the stones of the old town hall.
The collection’s best-known object is the carved ivory Jász horn known as Lehel’s Horn (Lehel kürtje), a symbol of the unity of the Jász people, which also appears in the coats of arms of most Jász settlements. The museum also preserves the legacy of Székely Mihály, the opera singer and Kossuth Prize-winning bass born in Jászberény, from which a memorial room was set up in the Látványraktár (visible storage).
The permanent exhibitions present life in the Jászság, the archaeological remains and Lehel’s Horn: visitors can also see the room and pantry of a Jász farmhouse, the Turkish corner and the archaeological hall. The museum is a centre for the preservation and research of Jász traditions; the Redemptio local history journal is published by the Jász Múzeumért Alapítvány (Foundation for the Jász Museum).
