About the museum

The Makó museum preserves and presents the town's collections. In the main building, the permanent town history exhibition “Küzdelmes évszázadok” (Centuries of Struggle) follows Makó's past from its resettlement after the Ottoman devastation to the change of regime. The exhibition covers the varied denominational life, social and economic development, the Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–49, the age of dualism, the First World War and Trianon, the Horthy era, local events of the Second World War, the decades of communism, and also the great flood of 1970.

In the exhibition, a working Ford Model T commemorates Galamb József, born in Makó, one of the designers of the legendary car, and a separate display recalls Pulitzer József, the world-famous American newspaper publisher whose family came from Makó. Former market, peasant, gentry and bourgeois interiors evoke life in the former seat of Csanád County; at the end of the exhibition, paintings by Székely Bertalan and Barabás Miklós are on display.

In the museum garden is an open-air ethnographic collection: a putri (traditional peasant house), granaries, barns, and blacksmith's, wheelwright's and carpenter's workshops, the Hagymásház, and a separate area presenting the folk art of Apátfalva. The literary venue, the Espersit-ház, has operated since 1979; it is named after the lawyer, politician and patron Espersit János, and in its courtyard stands the József Attila statue wearing a hat.
