About the museum
The Makó well museum is an open-air collection of the history of technology, located in the park of the headquarters of the Makó-Térségi Viziközmű Kft. (Makó Regional Water Utility Ltd.) at Tinódi utca 8/A. The collecting and restoration of old public wells, with wheel or hand pumps, began in 2001; the architectural technician Vida Sándor of Makó made a great contribution to building up the collection. Most of the wells were donated to the water utility by their former owners; a few were obtained by exchange.
The present collection consists of around eighteen pieces and presents the means of obtaining and lifting water from groundwater and from aquifers: wells with a beam-and-lever stand, with an arm-pump stand and with a windmill-driven tank (szélkazán). These played a decisive role in drinking-water supply until 1972, when piped drinking water had reached almost every household in Makó. The Makó well museum has also been registered by the Magyar Épületgépészeti Múzeum (Hungarian Building Services Museum) and by the Épületgépész Tagozat (Building Services Section) of the Magyar Mérnöki Kamara (Hungarian Chamber of Engineers).
