About the museum
The foundations of the Kiskun Múzeum were provided by the antiquities collection of the grammar school in Kiskunfélegyháza. In 1901 grammar school teacher Szalay Gyula proposed establishing an independent town museum, and on 7 December 1902 the town assembly adopted the proposal. The background goes back to the collecting work begun in the 1860s by teacher Miletz János.
The museum operates in the Dr. Holló Lajos utca complex of buildings. The main building and the prison building belonged to the former seat of the Kiskun District: in 1753 Maria Theresa moved the district’s seat of judicial authority to Félegyháza, which made the town the centre of the district.
Among the exhibitions are an archaeological exhibition presenting the history of Kiskunfélegyháza and its surroundings from the Neolithic to the late Middle Ages, study collections, an exhibition on the history of punishment, religious history and military history set up in the former prison building, and a fine arts exhibition presenting the works of László Holló.
