Vármúzeum

The exhibition venue of the Móra Ferenc Múzeum in the remains of the former Szeged castle, with a permanent history exhibition of Szeged and a stone collection.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 1,290

About the museum

Szeged’s medieval castle was built at the confluence of the Maros and the Tisza in the second half of the 13th century, after the Tatar invasion. Many Hungarian kings stayed within its walls in the Middle Ages, and the national assembly also met here several times. The Turks held it from 1543 to 1686; the castle was later demolished.

The present exhibition venue is located in the surviving part of the castle, in the restored area of the former Mária Terézia-kapu (Maria Theresa Gate). In the interactive permanent exhibition “Utazz a múltba!” (Travel into the Past!), visitors can learn about the history of Szeged, the past of the castle and the destruction caused by the great flood. The Kőtár (stone collection) in the courtyard on the Tisza side preserves the old architectural monuments of the town and the stone carvings that came to light during the demolition of the castle and during excavations.
