About the museum
The Mithras sanctuary of Fertőrákos was built in the 3rd century AD, probably by legionaries of Persian origin. The sanctuary served the cult of Mithras, the Persian sun god; its main attraction is the painted cult relief carved into the rock, which depicts the sun god slaying a bull. From the 4th century it was no longer used, and the cult was forgotten in the area.
The sanctuary was discovered in 1866 by ifjabb Storno Ferenc and Malleschitz György; the excavation was carried out by idősebb Storno Ferenc. During the Iron Curtain period it lay in the border zone, became inaccessible and its condition deteriorated. After the border was opened, it was reopened in 1989. The relief was restored in 1991 by the sculptor and restorer Kovács György; the protective building, designed by H. Vladár Ágnes, was completed in 1992.
The sanctuary stands in the forest between Fertőrákos and the Austrian Fertőmeggyes (Mörbisch), beside the B10 cycle path. It can be reached on foot, by bicycle, or by an excursion of about one hour by electric car or mini-train from Fertőrákos.
