About the museum
The castle is associated with Ráday Pál, the secret chancellor of II. Rákóczi Ferenc, and with his son Ráday Gedeon. In the first half of the 18th century, the former manor house became a Baroque castle, in the construction of which Mayerhoffer András and János took part. Ráday Gedeon collected a library of around twelve thousand volumes, and the castle became a meeting place for writers and scholars; Kazinczy Ferenc called it the “Parnassus of Pécel” (péceli Parnasszus).
A fire in 1825 caused damage to the building. In the 1860s the family sold the library, which passed to the Reformed Church; in the 1950s one department of the MÁV hospital operated in the castle. In the upper state hall, black-and-white wall paintings depicting scenes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses can be seen; beneath them are verses by Ráday Gedeon expressing moral lessons. The library hall is decorated with pink marble columns and original ceiling frescoes. The building has largely preserved its earlier condition; the Baroque kitchen was recently uncovered.
