About the museum

The core of the museum’s permanent collection was laid by the research and collecting work of Miklya Jenő, a primary school teacher. From 1961 onwards, the continually growing collection was mainly gathered by students in a local-heritage study circle. In 1969 the collection, representing traditional Sárrét folk life, ethnography and local history, was expanded with the bequest of Szeghalmy (Szennovitz) Gyula and with the personal objects and library of Sinka István. From 1991 the museum has operated in the former Simay Kisdedóvó (nursery school) building.

The permanent exhibition consists of three parts: the first brings to life the world of the pákászok (marsh fishermen), fishermen, herdsmen and people of the marshes through the tools of the ancient occupations; the second, titled “Nyitva az ajtóm, bejöhetsz…” (“My door is open, come in…”), is devoted to farming, which came to the fore after river regulation, and to the peasant way of life, offering a glimpse into the everyday life of the traditional Sárrét peasant house; the third, the “Mesterek utcája” (Street of Craftsmen), presents the tools of eight village crafts: watchmaker, hatter, barber, carpenter, blacksmith, bootmaker, ropemaker and grinder. Five to six temporary exhibitions are also held each year.
