About the museum
The collection presents the past of the island and of Szigetszentmiklós in the buildings of a 19th-century peasant farmstead. The archaeological exhibition traces the history of the town from prehistory to the emergence of the guilds in the 19th century; the objects found and excavated in the area date from the Neolithic, the Copper Age, the Bronze Age, the Roman period, the Avar period, and the Hungarian conquest (honfoglalás) and the early Árpád period. The historical material follows the social events of the village in the 15th–20th centuries with original documents.
The ethnographic room displays a section of a kitchen and a best room (tisztaszoba) with turn-of-the-century furniture, local costume (blue apron, bőgatya (wide linen trousers), suba (sheepskin coat)) and photographs of everyday life in Szigetszentmiklós; around the csikós stove stand the jugs and bowls of the potters of Csákvár. The shed presents the tools of farming, meadow management, fishing, viticulture and winemaking, blacksmithing and shoemaking, animal husbandry and transport. In the courtyard there are a stone collection, a brick collection, heart-shaped painted gravestones unique in the country, and a shaduf well and a wheel well.
