About the museum

Pilisszentlélek (in Slovak: Huta) is the smallest Slovak settlement in the county and administratively belongs to Esztergom. The house that accommodates the village heritage house was built by György Károly in the 1920s. The gable-roofed house with a front garden, in a comb-like row development, has a distinctive floor plan and form that reflects the Slovak folk building tradition; for this reason it was declared a monument-like building in 1994.

The building was restored in 2001, and in spring 2002 the village’s local history and ethnographic collection was set up here. The village museum was established by Konczius Ida. The clean room and the kitchen are shown in their original condition; the back room holds archaeological finds, documents and records, and the stable displays farming tools.

Until 2012 the village heritage house was run by the Balassa Bálint Múzeum; from 2006 it was maintained by the city of Esztergom, and since 1 January 2013 it has been an exhibition site of the Balassa Bálint Museum of the Hungarian National Museum. On the hill above the village stand the ruins of a Pauline monastery dating from the Árpád period.
