About the museum
The museum is named after Vasvári Pál (1826–1849), born in Bűdszentmihály (today Tiszavasvári), one of the leaders of the March Youth. The institution was founded in 1963; its first director was Gombás András, a teacher and self-taught archaeologist, who excavated the archaeological remains of his native village and established the museum by collecting from the village’s residents. From 1969 the institution was led by Hunyadi József.
The museum has moved several times. Today it operates in two buildings: the main building can be reached from Városháza tér (Town Hall Square), and the ethnographic building on Kálvin út was built at the end of the 18th century and was originally a Reformed parsonage. The permanent exhibitions include “7000 év titkai – A Nyíri mezőség régészeti kincsei” (Secrets of 7000 Years – The Archaeological Treasures of the Nyíri Plain) and the history of medicine and pharmacy in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County; in the ethnographic building there are the tiszabüdi tisztaszoba (best room from Tiszabüd) and the Mesterségek utcája (Street of Crafts).
The museum also keeps the historical documents of the world-famous Alkaloida pharmaceutical factory.
