About the museum
The Baláca villa estate was the centre of one of the rich landed estates of 2nd–4th-century Pannonia. The central residential house, with a floor area of about 2,400 square metres, is among the largest known villa buildings in Pannonia. The former owners’ wealth is attested by mosaic floors and wall paintings, which are rare in Hungary.
The residential house and the farm buildings once stood on an area of nearly 55 hectares, of which about two hectares are open to visitors today. The garden of the estate is laid out like a park; its Mediterranean atmosphere is completed by an exhibition on spices and medicinal herbs and by an authentic sundial modelled on a Roman one.
The site operates as a member institution of the Hungarian National Museum; the material for the permanent exhibitions is provided by the Laczkó Dezső Múzeum. During opening hours visitors can walk freely through the ruin garden with an entrance ticket, and with prior registration they can also request a guided tour and a museum education session. The site regularly hosts Roman-themed programmes and summer children’s camps.
