About the museum
The Pinacoteca belongs to the Accademia dei Concordi, a cultural institution in Rovigo founded in 1580 to promote the cultural life of the city and of the Polesine and to preserve its documentary, library and artistic heritage. The original core was a series of portraits of distinguished figures, commissioned by the academy's members in the 18th century from artists such as Piazzetta, Tiepolo, Nogari and Alessandro Longhi.
In the second half of the 19th century, donations from several noble families of Rovigo enriched the collection with Venetian works from the 14th to the 18th century, as well as Emilian and Flemish paintings. Since 1982 the collection has also included the Pinacoteca del Seminario Vescovile, which brings together more than 200 works.
Since 2005 the collections have been housed in Palazzo Roverella, a Renaissance palace facing Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. The route covers about seven centuries of painting, from the Gothic period and Giovanni Bellini through 16th-century Venetian art and the 17th century to the great Venetian painters of the 18th century, and ends with works of the early 20th century by Mario Cavaglieri, a painter from Rovigo. The visit also includes a 22-metre-long 19th-century diorama.
