About the museum
The Casa Museo Giacomo Matteotti occupies the country villa where Giacomo Matteotti lived with his wife Velia Titta and their children Giancarlo, Matteo and Isabella, and where the family continued to live after his murder in 1924. The building, already listed in the Catastico veneto of 1775, has a tripartite layout with a central hall, side rooms and a staircase. In the early decades of the 20th century it was extended with a loggia and a terrace, and it was bought by Matteotti's father, Girolamo. The property now belongs to the Accademia dei Concordi di Rovigo under the children's will, while management is the responsibility of the Municipality of Fratta Polesine.
The house was established by law 255/2004, restored between 2006 and 2009 and recognised as a national monument by law 213/2017 for its great historical and political value. It is also a museum of major regional interest. For the centenary of the murder, in 2024, it received a new conservation restoration and a radical redisplay promoted by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo.
The route unfolds over three floors. The ground floor is devoted to Matteotti and the Polesine, to his education and political thought; the first floor to the Matteotti-Titta family; the second to the murder and to the value of testimony today. Multimedia installations with video, voices and sounds, including his last speech to the Chamber of Deputies on 30 May 1924, accompany the visit. It also includes the hall where the lying-in-state chamber (camera ardente) was set up, and the garden established in 2004.
