About the museum
The Museo dei Grandi Fiumi is housed in the former Olivetan monastery, a medieval building dating from the 13th century, in Piazzale San Bartolomeo in Rovigo. It opened in 2001 and tells the story of the Polesine, the territory shaped by the rivers Po and Adige, often called the “Mesopotamia of Italy”.
The route is divided into five sections, from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age (with Etruscan influences), the Roman period, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and documents the environmental, archaeological and cultural heritage of the area with reconstructions of find sites, life-size dioramas, 3D models and multimedia installations. The collections also include ceramics from the 14th to the 18th century, and some finds have copies that visitors can touch.
One section is dedicated to the set designer Gabbris Ferrari, author of many of the displays. The museum offers educational activities, workshops and guided visits for adults and children.
