About the museum
The Antiquarium is housed in the town hall of Baschi, a building of medieval origin, and spreads over two floors. It is a small educational museum devoted largely to the Scoppieto archaeological excavation near Civitella del Lago, where a Roman pottery workshop was uncovered, active from the late 1st century BC to 70–80 AD.
On the ground floor, the first section uses panels to illustrate the production stages of fine tableware, the so-called Italic terra sigillata with its red-orange surface, with a reconstruction of a double-chamber kiln, vessels, moulds and stamps. The second section is devoted to trade: oil lamps, coins, African red slip ware and fragments of amphorae show how the products of Scoppieto reached Rome and centres across the Mediterranean, as far as Alexandria in Egypt, transported by small boats on the Tiber.
In the basement, the third section presents, with panels, the finds from the municipal territory from the protohistoric period (13th century BC) to the Barbarian age (6th century AD). These are now held in various Italian museums, together with a dedicatory cippus to the god Tiberinus.
