About the museum
The Vallone di San Lorenzo necropolis lies about 5 km from Montecchio, in a wooded area of holm oaks and junipers within the Parco fluviale del Tevere. The tombs, dating between the 6th and 4th centuries BC, show strong links with nearby Etruscan Orvieto, especially in its period of greatest splendour.
The burials are chambers cut into soft calcarenite, locally called “matile”. An open-air access corridor (dromos) leads to the chamber, which has side benches imitating banqueting beds on which the dead were laid. Small side rooms held grave goods or other family members; child burials, in simple pits, are often found near the entrances. The tombs were already looted in antiquity.
The finds, displayed in the Antiquarium comunale di Tenaglie, reveal a prosperous community: men were buried with iron weapons and banqueting vessels, women with jewellery and unguent containers. From the 4th century BC the site declined with the rise of Todi and Roman expansion. The necropolis was identified in 1855 by the archaeologist Domenico Golini.
