About the museum
The municipal Antiquarium of Latina is housed in the Procoio at Borgo Sabotino, a 19th-century proto-industrial building once used for processing milk. The museum is arranged in four rooms and traces the settlement of the Agro Pontino from prehistory to the full land reclamation.
The first room presents cartographic and photographic material on the origins of the settlement. Prehistoric finds and architectural, sculptural and terracotta fragments that emerged during the land reclamation works, as well as original maps from the 16th–18th centuries, document the transformation of the territory; the Pontine Mousterian stone tools come from the valleys of the Astura and the Gorgolicino-Cicerchia and from the shores of Lake Fogliano.
The following rooms hold epigraphic, sculptural, terracotta and architectural material, imported marbles, votive offerings, brick stamps and objects related to weaving. A section on maritime archaeology displays anchor stocks, amphorae and objects from shipwrecks, including material from the Foce Verde wreck; several display cases contain Etruscan-Roman, Magna Graecia, Campanian and Roman lamps and vases. The museum also houses the numismatic section of the Museo “M. Valeriani”.
