About the museum
The Museo di Arte e Giacimenti Minerari was founded in 1984 thanks to a donation from the association Assomarmi, which gave the university one hundred slabs of Italian ornamental stone. At first the collection was housed in the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Chimica dei Materiali, delle Materie Prime e Metallurgia of the Sapienza, in Via Eudossiana 18 in Rome. In October 2000 it was moved to the Facoltà di Ingegneria of the Polo di Latina, where it finally has a home of its own.
Over time the collection has grown to about 150 slabs of ornamental stone from various Italian regions, accompanied by photographic, cartographic and illustrative material on quarrying techniques, quarries and stratigraphic sequences. The aim is to offer as complete a picture as possible of the main commercial varieties of Italian ornamental stone, indicated by their trade names. The display is arranged by region of origin, then by lithological category and geological formation.
The second collection comprises about 90 samples of mineralised rocks from Italian deposits and from other areas of the world, arranged in display cases by type of deposit and by genesis. Non-metallic minerals and rocks of industrial interest, such as bauxite, sulphur, lignite, talc and gypsum, have dedicated cases; one special case holds gold samples, and another the Bayan Obo deposit in Mongolia, one of the largest producers of rare earths.
