About the museum
The museum commemorates the Allied landing at Anzio and Nettuno on 22 January 1944, when the fleet of the VI Corps, commanded by General John Porter Lucas, began operations with hundreds of amphibious and war vessels. After months of fighting, the Allies reached Velletri and Frosinone at the end of May and liberated Rome on 5 June 1944.
The exhibition occupies several rooms on the rampart walkway of Forte Sangallo, the 16th-century fortress of Nettuno, which also houses the Antiquarium comunale (site museum), with its sections on palaeontology and prehistory and on Roman archaeology. The museum is run by the municipality of Nettuno.
The collections include period documents, helmets, photographs, maps, everyday objects of soldiers on both sides, reproductions of period newspapers, accounts by war correspondents and war materiel found in the Nettuno and Anzio area.
