About the museum
The gallery was founded at the end of the 1930s in Littoria (today Latina), thanks to donations from public bodies and from artists who had taken part in the 20th Venice Biennale and the 2nd Quadriennale di Roma. With the evacuation of the city and the wartime events of 1943–1944 most of the works were lost, and about seventy remained.
In December 1994 the Comune reopened the gallery to the public in the Palazzo della Cultura, with the surviving works, those recovered by the Carabinieri and new donations and acquisitions. Since 1999 there has been a contemporary section devoted to painting after 1955.
The collection includes more than 400 pieces from the late 19th century to the present; the artists represented include Ugo Attardi, Corrado Cagli, Domenico Cantatore, Salvatore Fiume, Marino Marini, Plinio Nomellini, Aligi Sassu, Arturo Tosi and Ernesto Treccani.
