About the museum

The MAM originates from the international symposium “Scultura Viva”, launched in 1996 by the cultural association l’altrArte and later continued in the Festival dell’Arte sul Mare, held every year in June. Artists carve travertine blocks which become part of the breakwater of the harbour’s south pier: the museum was inaugurated in June 2012, when over one hundred sculptures were already present along the pier.

Today the route is about one kilometre long and includes about 240 works: some 210 sculptures and around thirty murals and installations, made by about 210 artists from 40 nations. The first two sections are dedicated to sculpture, including the seafarers’ nativity scene (presepe marinaro), with figures turned towards a Nativity visible in the water, while the third section hosts murals by Italian and foreign street artists and by local schools.

Among the best-known works are the bronze of the seagull Jonathan Livingston by Mario Lupo (1986), about eight metres in size, the travertine sculpture by Genti Tavanxhiu dedicated to Monsignor Sciocchetti (2006) and the nativity scene by Giuseppe Straccia.
