About the museum
The Pinacoteca del Mare opened in April 2009 in the historic centre of San Benedetto del Tronto, in the Palazzo Piacentini in the Paese Alto (upper old town). It is part of the Museo del Mare complex, which is housed in the port’s fish market, and was created to present in a unified way the civic works of art that had previously been kept in storage or in public offices.
The largest and most important section is devoted to the Swiss painter Alfred Joseph Chatelain (1863–1942), with paintings, photographs and drawings. It is followed by Adolfo De Carolis (1874–1928), who portrayed scenes of everyday life and the sea along the Piceno coast, and by the San Benedetto-born Armando Marchegiani (1902–1987), represented with oil paintings and works on paper. In the room near the entrance two canvases by Angelo Landi (1879–1944) are on display, lent by a private collection.
In 2009 the collection was enriched by the photo album “Vele ritrovate”, donated by Maria Antonietta and Luigi Anelli, whose images are attributed to De Carolis. Recurring themes are the sea, the landscapes of the Piceno coast and the everyday life of the area.
