About the museum

The museum tells the story of the discovery of the Uomo di Val Rosna. In 1987 Aldo Villabruna found human bone remains and an Epigravettian arrowhead, the last phase of the Upper Palaeolithic, at a building site in the municipality of Sovramonte, where the Rosna and Cismon streams meet. The find surprised the scientific community, and the Università di Ferrara launched an excavation campaign that uncovered three rock shelters beneath the rock face, all visited several times over the course of prehistory.

The oldest burial, around 14,000 years old, belongs to a hunter aged 25–30 who was covered with stones painted with red ochre, one of the oldest known forms of funerary art. The stones show a dancing man, linear bands, deer antlers and a figure with many arms. The remains also provide the oldest known case of dental treatment among our ancestors: the removal of a cavity from a wisdom tooth.

The museum, run by Tramedistoria Impresa Sociale, currently displays no original finds. Instead it presents the context in nine rooms of reconstructions and faithful copies, films that recreate Palaeolithic gestures and atmospheres, and interviews with those who made the discoveries.
