About the museum
The Mulino al Pizzon stands on the bank of an ancient course of the Po, now called the Tartaro-Canalbianco, at the point where the Scortico canal, branching off from the Adige, flows into it. That drop in water was an obstacle to the navigable waterway between the Po and the Adige, so much so that the Republic of Venice built two navigation locks there in 1500, still visible. To exploit the same difference in level, a ground-level water mill was built around the mid-19th century, an exceptional example of industrial archaeology dating from 1850.
The building was saved from abandonment thanks to the commitment of an entrepreneur and of the social promotion association CTG (Centro Turistico Giovanile), which turned it into a place of hospitality with rooms, a restaurant and a museum. The mill is one of the founding members of the Associazione Nazionale Mulini Storici.
The museum inside the mill preserves the original machinery for grinding wheat and maize. The visit, which is booked by e-mail or telephone, weaves together the stories of millers, farmers and fishermen; educational workshops on bread and ancient grains are also offered, as well as a presentation of the site’s renewable energy systems. In front of the mill are the small Squero boatyard for repairing river boats and a landing stage for boats and canoes.
