About the museum

The Castello del Goceano, also called the Castello di Burgos, stands at about 650 metres above sea level on a granite peak on the slopes of Monte Rasu. It was built in the first half of the 12th century, traditionally in 1134, at the wish of the judge (giudice) of Torres, Gonario, to control and defend the territory of the Goceano. It takes its name from the village of Burgos, founded later, in 1337, on the initiative of the judge Mariano IV of Arborea.

The fortress was at the centre of many events between the Sardinian giudicati and the Mediterranean powers. After the passage to Pisa and the return to the giudicato of Torres, Adelasia of Torres withdrew there, a figure linked to the legend of the castle. It later passed to the Genoese, the Doria and the Arborea, and finally to the Aragonese, who lost interest in it for strategic reasons. Under Spanish rule the complex was abandoned.

The castle consists of a triple circuit of walls, perimeter walls enclosing an inner courtyard, and a great keep more than fifteen metres high. Restorations began in the 1960s. A new intervention, funded with PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) money, which strengthened the tower and walls, required about a year's closure. The castle reopened at the beginning of 2026, with guided visits run by the Sa Reggia cooperative.

In the centre of the village, in a late 19th-century manor house, the Museo dei Castelli di Sardegna (Museum of the Castles of Sardinia) displays material on fortresses, coastal towers and strategic points of the island and offers a multimedia room. The museum visit is followed by the guided walk to the castle.
