About the museum
The collection has been on display since 2018 at Villa Sulis, in the hamlet of Costa in Castelnovo del Friuli, where the association Scuola per la ceramica di Villa Sulis is also based. Its theme is the ceramic tradition of Castelnovo, regarded as a significant part of the historical and cultural identity of the area.
The materials come from excavations carried out between the 1970s and 1980s of the 20th century on the Crûz hill, near the Madonna dello Zucco. More than five thousand pottery fragments have been recovered, dating to the middle and the second half of the 16th century; many are production waste, a clue suggesting a production area.
The workshops used clay from the castle hills to make mainly tableware and household objects. The Crûz deposit may have been the dumping ground of a nearby kiln. The finds belong to the State and are displayed with the authorisation of the heritage authority (Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle arti e Paesaggio del Friuli Venezia Giulia).
