About the museum
The permanent exhibition is set up in the town hall of Forgaria nel Friuli, in a room of the municipal building. It presents material from the excavations on the Castelraimondo hill, known in Friulian as Zuc Scjaramont, between Forgaria and San Rocco. The excavations, carried out in several phases, have documented occupation from the 4th century BC to the 14th century AD.
The exhibition route opens with a description of the hill and traces its history through four periods: pre-Roman, Roman, post-Roman and early medieval, and medieval and Renaissance. In pre-Roman times a fortified village stood on the hill, controlling the passage of livestock and iron materials from the Alps towards the upper Adriatic. The Romans later built a fortress there, and in the Middle Ages a castle arose, later destroyed.
Display cases hold coins, brooches, tools, ceramics, jewellery and weapons, as well as fragments of coarse pottery from the pre-Roman period. Among the most unusual pieces is the iynx, a buzzing bone instrument from the 4th century BC linked to magical and ritual practices. The archaeological site itself is a cultural park with a walking route, separate from the exhibition.
