About the museum

The Centro di Documentazione della civiltà contadina e della pesca (Documentation Centre for Rural Civilisation and Fishing) was founded in the early 1980s on the initiative of four founding members, collectors who had exhibited their objects at the village’s annual fair and decided to bring their collections together into a single nucleus of memories of the rural world of the Polesine. The exhibition, opened in 1981 in premises made available by the municipality, grew with donations from the community, to the point of having a detached section at Polesine Camerini.

After several moves the collection was placed at Ca’ Tiepolo, in a former building of the Delta Radio broadcasting station, which was not very suitable for housing it. The centre is owned by the Municipality of Porto Tolle, is run on a voluntary basis by the Associazione Civiltà Contadina and is part of the Sistema Museale Provinciale Polesine.

The collection, with more than a thousand items including objects from the Protti family of landowners, is divided into two areas: everyday life, with a reconstruction of a farmhouse with kitchen and bedroom, and economic activities, with tools for processing grain, growing sugar beet and rice, fishing and crafts. According to the information available, the centre is closed to the public while awaiting a new display in a permanent venue.
