About the museum

The museum is located at Ca’ Vendramin, originally owned by a noble Venetian family, in Taglio di Po, on the Scolo Veneto canal opposite the Po di Goro. It occupies a group of buildings erected at the beginning of the 20th century: an imposing pumping station and the neighbouring buildings, once used as offices, warehouses, a workshop and a guesthouse.

The plant was built between 1900 and 1903 and tested in 1905. It served to raise the water from the western part of the Ariano island, collected by the Scolo Veneto, and discharge it over the embankment into the Po di Goro. The engine room housed four steam turbines plus one spare, fed by ten coal boilers, with a 60-metre-high chimney and a maximum capacity of about 11,000 litres per second; in 1921 part of the plant was electrified.

The floods of 1957 and 1960 changed the hydrogeological setup of the island and made the works first insufficient and then useless: the plant was decommissioned in 1969. The Consorzio di bonifica Delta Po Adige (land reclamation consortium), founded in 1978, restored it and turned it into the present museum. It is an original museum, in which the pumping station building itself is the collection: machines, spaces and equipment that document the work of people to live alongside the river and keep habitable lands that lie on the delicate balance between land and water.
