Museum of the Istituto Cimbro of Luserna: Cimbrian history and traditions, the Great War, prehistoric archaeometallurgy, alpine fauna and a model of the Altipiani forts.
The annual exhibition of the Museo Lusérn is devoted to the painter Rheo Martin Pedrazza, with his paintings placed alongside works by twentieth-century artists, and to the psychoanalyst Elvio Fachinelli, with archive documents and a timeline.
About the museum
The Museo Lusérn is run by the Kulturinstitut Lusérn – Istituto Cimbro, which has long been committed to protecting and passing on the Cimbrian language. Through its rooms it aims to tell and promote the origins, history and traditions of the Cimbrian community of Luserna. The exhibition spaces, with panels, ethnographic objects and multimedia tools, explore the characteristics of the territory of Luserna and of the Cimbrian Altipiani.
The permanent room “Alfabeto della Grande Guerra. 26 lettere per non dimenticare” offers a striking display commemorating the fallen of the First World War. On the first floor, the prehistoric archaeometallurgy room illustrates the Final Bronze Age settlements in the Luserna area, attested by smelting furnaces for copper. Other rooms are devoted to the origins and development of the Cimbrian community and to the typical activities of its people: bobbin lace, stonework, hunting and domestic life.
A section much loved by families presents alpine fauna, from the large predators to birds, small rodents and amphibians. Next to the museum is the Centro Visitatori Fortezze degli Altipiani, with a large 1:10,000 scale model of the Austro-Hungarian and Italian forts on the Altipiani front. The museum also houses the office of the APT (tourist board) and organises a new temporary exhibition every year.
