About the museum

The Civica raccolta d'arte “Claudio Ridolfi” in Corinaldo opened to the public in 1996 and since 2012 has been housed in some rooms of the former convent of the Augustinian Hermits (padri eremitani di Sant'Agostino), in Largo XVII Settembre 1860, with a layout renewed on that occasion.

The collection largely derives from property confiscated after the suppression of the religious orders, and so has the character of a museum of sacred art: alongside numerous religious paintings it holds precious liturgical furnishings of the so-called minor arts. To the pieces from the Augustinian complex have been added altarpieces recovered from churches demolished in the 19th century (Santa Maria di Piazza, San Rocco, San Pietro Apostolo) and canvases on deposit from other churches in the town.

Among the rarest works are eighteen bust reliquaries in carved and painted wood, made by Sicilian woodcarvers in the early 17th century, and a processional cross in embossed silver of 1615. The picture gallery holds paintings by Ercole Ramazzani, Gaspare Gasparini, Claudio Ridolfi, Domenico Peruzzini and Giuseppe Marchesi. An archaeological section also displays the finds from the so-called Tomb of the Prince of Corinaldo, discovered in the Nevola area.
