About the museum
The collection is housed in the Castello Mediceo in Melegnano, a brick building with a U-shaped plan and two corner towers. The Visconti founded the castle as a fortress at the end of the 13th century; in 1532 it became a noble residence, and its halls were decorated with frescoes dedicated to Gian Giacomo Medici, known as Medeghino.
The collection is named after Don Cesare Amelli (Melegnano, 1924), a priest, teacher and local historian. He founded the Biblioteca civica in 1969 and the Rivista Storica Melegnanese in 1989, and was the first to interpret the castle's frescoes: his studies led to the opening of the Museo Storico in 2002. Today the castle hosts cultural events and guided tours run by volunteers from the Pro Loco.
