About the museum
Villa de Brandis in San Giovanni al Natisone was built between 1718 and 1724. The last descendant of the noble family, Countess Caterina de Brandis, donated it with its furnishings to the Comune di San Giovanni al Natisone, which now runs it as a museum venue.
The museum occupies the first floor of the villa. It includes a picture gallery with paintings from the 14th to the 20th century, and original wooden furnishings and household objects dating from the 16th to the 19th century. The family library, with about 6,000 volumes printed between 1501 and 1980, the photographic archive and the family archive are not in the museum rooms but in the nearby Biblioteca Civica.
Behind the villa stretches a park, now more than a century old, in the English landscape style, with magnolias, palms, beeches, hornbeams, cedars, limes, large thujas and a central pond; the park is open to the public every day during daylight hours.
