About the museum
The museum was established in 1987 by ministerial decree and at the direction of the Army General Staff, and is named after the Cavalry Brigade “Pozzuolo del Friuli”. It opened to the public in July 1990, after renovation work, with the aim of enhancing the fortress for cultural purposes and linking its history to the military units that served there over some four hundred years.
The administration is based in the Palazzo del Governatore alle Armi (1613), in Piazza Grande, where the offices and some rooms dedicated to the units linked to the city and to Friuli are located. The main exhibition area, of about 400 square metres, occupies the tower of Porta Cividale, with thematic sections on fortifications, armaments and uniforms. Particularly significant is the collection of uniforms, with drawings, reproductions and original uniforms from the First and Second World Wars.
The route is completed by the fortifications area, an extensive open space of about 386,000 square metres that includes the Baluardo, the Rivellino and the Napoleonic lunetta. The visit ends with a walk along a section of the walls, from which the three defensive rings of the city can be recognised. The museum also has an archive, available for consultation, with books, photographs and original military documents.
