About the museum
The museum stands next to the Tempio nazionale della Madonna del Conforto in Cargnacco, a hamlet of Pozzuolo del Friuli, about 7 km from Udine. The temple, in exposed brick to a design by the architect Giacomo Della Mea, is dedicated to the fallen and missing of the Russian campaign; the crypt holds the registers with the names of the soldiers who did not return.
The museum, run by the Unione nazionale italiana reduci di Russia (UNIRR), gathers testimonies of the Italian army’s commitment on the Russian front between 1941 and 1943. It displays photographs, documents and relics, and one room is devoted to the arrival on the Don of the other divisions deployed, with uniforms, objects and texts of the time.
The museum’s office can provide information about the fate of soldiers listed as missing. The Russian campaign cost Italy tens of thousands of victims, both fallen and missing.
