About the museum
The civic museum of Summonte is housed in the Complesso Castellare, on the top of the old village, where a castle documented for the first time in 1094 once stood. For centuries Summonte was mainly a military stronghold, and the cylindrical tower with a truncated-conical base, built between the late 13th and early 14th century, survives from the old fortification system.
In the 1990s excavations carried out with the Soprintendenza archeologica (archaeological heritage authority) uncovered the structures of the castle from the Norman-Swabian period. The tower, reduced to a ruin, was restored, with the original masonry recovered and the timber floors rebuilt; today, together with the castle’s rooms, it houses the museum.
The circuit has two sections. In the rooms of the guardroom, the permanent exhibition “Submontis Medievalia” presents reproductions of weapons and tools used by garrisons between the late 15th and early 16th century. In the Torre Angioina are displayed finds from the excavations of the castle area between 1994 and 2005, which document continuous use of the site from the Middle Ages to the modern period.
