A route devoted to plants that defend themselves, attack and adapt to hostile environments: from carnivorous species to poisonous ones or those able to deceive insects.
About the museum
The Ecomuseo del Freidano was founded in 1985 in Settimo Torinese to protect the industrial and environmental heritage of the city and was recognised by the Piedmont Region in 1999. It is the only urban ecomuseum in Piedmont and revolves around the theme of water, inspired by the ancient Rio Freidano and the canals that shaped the city. It is part of the Fondazione Esperienze di Cultura Metropolitana (Fondazione ECM).
The operational base is the Mulino Nuovo, a 19th-century milling complex used as a cultural space since 1996, close to Piazzale Freidano. In the mill’s silo the Museo Etnografico recreates the atmosphere and workplaces of the late 19th century; the former grinding room hosts the Spazio Mostre, and outside the Parco dell’Energia shows how water wheels and millstones work.
The ecomuseum also includes the Torre Medievale, a remnant of the ancient castle, with the exhibition “Nel segno dell’acqua: la torre e la città” and the Infopoint culturale, and a network of cycle and pedestrian paths, installations and thematic itineraries around the city, described as an open-air museum.
