About the museum
The Ecomuseo dell'Alabastro is a dispersed environmental museum spanning three municipalities, Castellina Marittima, Santa Luce and Volterra, each with its own exhibition centre. It tells the story and production of alabaster from the Etruscan period to the present, linking the quarries of Castellina Marittima and Santa Luce with the carving and sale of the stone in Volterra.
The museum point at Castellina Marittima, housed in the former Palazzo Opera Pia “Massimino Carrai”, is the central unit of the system and the starting point of the quarrying route. It displays historical documents and the tools used to extract and work alabaster, with the aim of arousing curiosity about the area.
From here one reaches the “luogo del lavoro” (place of work) in the valley of the Marmolaio stream, where a gallery quarry of “scaglione” alabaster, of particularly fine quality and described as the only gallery quarry of this type still in existence, has been recovered and made accessible. Visitors can see for themselves how the extraction was carried out.
