About the museum
The museum is housed in Villa Guerrazzi, in Cecina, in the locality of La Cinquantina. The building was constructed in the second half of the 18th century as a “casone di lavoria”, lodging for the seasonal workers of the grand-ducal estate. After the land reclamation of the 19th century it became a permanent farm. In 1868 the writer Francesco Domenico Guerrazzi bought the estate and turned it into a villa; he died there in 1873. The Municipality of Cecina bought it in 1975 and, after more than twenty years of work, restored it for cultural use.
The villa also houses the Museo Archeologico Etrusco Romano, schools of music and drama and a multipurpose hall. The museum of rural life, in a renovated display inaugurated in 2003, presents the tools used for field work in northern Maremma, arranged by theme.
The sections cover land cultivation, with ploughs, carts, mowers and threshers; cereal farming, with winnowing fans, sieves and fodder choppers; and viticulture, with destemmers, sprayers and sulphur dusters.
