About the museum

The ecomuseum is located at Pra dou Sas, at the gateway to the Mont Mars Nature Reserve, in a mid-mountain village whose buildings have in part been turned into a museum of themselves.

A two-storey house of masonry has the cowshed on the lower level and, on the upper one, the room with the hearth for processing milk and the family’s living quarters. In the nearby wooden rascard are the area once used for threshing rye and the space for storing provisions, while in the cellar below is the room for maturing cheeses.

Part of the rascard holds a collection of carpentry tools and other traditional trades; the tools of the mason are of particular interest, a typical trade of the village whose inhabitants were also known abroad, where they worked in the warm season.

Getting there & parking

From Fontainemore, drive for a few kilometres along the regional road towards Gressoney to the bridge on the right that leads to the Mont Mars Reserve; after crossing the Lys, continue towards Pillaz-Pian Coumarial and, leaving on the left the junction for the hamlet of Pillaz, you reach the locality of Pra dou Sas, where signs for the ecomuseum are posted.
