About the museum
The Larino civic museum occupies the first floor of the Palazzo Ducale, a building next to the cathedral that today also houses the town hall. The palazzo began as a Norman castle in the 11th century; from the 17th century it was converted into a noble residence by the De Sangro family, and in the 19th century it passed to the town council, which in 1888 added a second façade facing the present-day Piazza Roma.
The exhibition, titled Ars et Ingenium, brings together finds from the Larino area, ancient Larinum, dating mainly from the 10th century BC to the 4th century AD. They include vases, amphorae, unguentaria, spears, helmets, oil lamps and small statues linked to the cult of Mars, the protective deity of the town.
Among the most notable pieces are the group of Hercules and Priapus, the statue of a boy in a toga and a cast of a bronze plaque with the Senatus consultum of Larino, dating from the 1st century AD. Three Roman mosaic floors are also on display: the Mosaico degli Uccelli, the Mosaico del Leone and the Mosaico della Lupa.
