About the museum
The Museo diocesano “G.A. Tria” is housed in the episcopal palace of Larino, in Piazza del Duomo, next to the cathedral. It is dedicated to Bishop Giovanni Andrea Tria and gathers testimonies of sacred art from the whole territory of Lower Molise. Opened in 2012 with a temporary display, it was renewed and inaugurated on 28 May 2022 at the wish of Bishop Gianfranco De Luca, with a completely restructured new wing.
The route extends over four large rooms plus other adjoining spaces. The 2022 additions include display cases devoted to the cathedral treasure, new works from the diocese, a Marian room with the painting of the Madonna di Civitacampomarano, restored by the heritage authority (Soprintendenza), a room for education and a restoration workshop, and a room with contemporary works gathered from the diocesan art exhibitions of recent years.
The oldest historical section, in the sacristy of the cathedral, displays an altar, the bishop’s throne, choir stalls, furnishings, numerous canvases and painted panels, and silverwork from the 17th to 19th century, with two 15th-century wooden panels. The museum also includes areas of two sacred buildings on the same square: the church of San Francesco, now used for cultural events, and the 14th-century cathedral basilica. Together with the historical archive and the diocesan library, the museum forms the cultural hub of the diocese.
