About the museum

The gallery is housed in the Palazzo comunale, on Piazza del Popolo in San Severino Marche, and is one of the town's four civic museums, together with the Museo archeologico “Giuseppe Moretti”, the Pinacoteca civica “Tacchi Venturi” and the electricity and territory museum MUSET.

The collections include modern and contemporary paintings and a collection devoted to Filippo Bigioli, a 19th-century painter and engraver. Among his works are canvases with historical subjects, such as “Pio IX saluta Ferdinando II” and “Giorgio il Nero”, genre scenes such as the “Passeggiata al Pincio”, religious paintings, including “Sacra Famiglia” and “Deposizione”, with numerous sketches, and works of neoclassical taste, such as “Bagnanti” and “Iride portata dagli Zefiri”, with putti and cupids.

A particular section is the Galleria Dantesca: 27 oil sketches inspired by the three canticles of the Divine Comedy, preparatory studies for large faux-tapestry paintings, among them the “Allegoria dei Funerali di Dante” and “Paolo e Francesca”.
