About the museum
The museum is housed in the former episcopal palace of Castello al Monte, on Monte Nero, overlooking the town of San Severino Marche, and has occupied this site since 2003. The archaeological collection began to form in 1972 and is named after Giuseppe Moretti, an archaeologist from Settempeda (the ancient name of San Severino) who served as superintendent in Rome and Ancona and from 1937 directed the reconstruction of the Ara Pacis.
The collections follow the historical and urban development of the area from prehistory to the late Imperial age. On the ground floor, the immersive, multisensory route “La Storia Toccata con Mano” (“History You Can Touch”) covers prehistory and the Picene and Roman civilisations, with stone tools, a room with eight inscriptions and tactile stations presenting 3D reproductions of the finds.
The route is accessible thanks to ramps and a lift funded by PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) money. The museum app offers audio and video content, designed also for visitors with disabilities.
