About the museum
La Nave della Sila is a narrative museum dedicated to Italian emigration, conceived by the Fondazione Napoli Novantanove and curated by Gian Antonio Stella. It opened in 2005 on the Old Calabria Torre Camigliati estate, in the heart of the Sila plateau, in an old cattle shed restored by the architect Sila Barracco.
The visit takes place among large photographs, most of them previously unpublished, accompanied by a narrating voice that tells stories of suffering, courage and hope, and by a soundtrack of emigrant songs. The setting recalls the deck of a ship, with the funnels serving as points for further information. The project aims to commemorate the departures of millions of people, but also the contribution of those who carried Italian enterprise around the world.
In July 2013 the section “Mar e Madre” was opened, set up in a container next to the museum and devoted to immigration to Italy. The story begins with the arrival of the ship Vlora at Bari on 8 August 1991 and recalls the journeys of migrants across the sea and the desert, with the voice of Erri De Luca reading from his book “Cimitero di Lampedusa”.
