About the museum
The permanent exhibition “I cimeli di Leone XIII” (The Relics of Leo XIII) is set up in Carpineto Romano, in the former church of San Nicola, which was the parish church of the noble Pecci family and the church in which Gioacchino Pecci, the future Pope Leo XIII, was born in 1810. The building, now used as a cultural centre, is reached by a steep double flight of limestone steps and has three slightly asymmetrical naves, with rather slender piers and arches.
The exhibition gathers objects donated or acquired over the years that belonged to the pope from Carpineto, such as garments and other personal effects. Given the variety of the original items, the display follows a chrono-thematic approach that reflects the different personalities of Leo XIII: the man, the teacher and the statesman.
The sections are punctuated by short messages in Latin, the language favoured by this pope, a refined Latinist.
