About the museum
The museum opened in 2009 in a restored part of the 16th-century Palazzo Caetani, in the medieval centre of Bassiano, in the province of Latina. It is dedicated to Aldo Manuzio, a humanist and printer born in the town around 1449, regarded as the finest printer of his time and the first publisher in the modern sense. The display was created in collaboration with the Università La Sapienza di Roma.
The route, historical and anthropological in approach, focuses on writing in its oldest and most unusual forms, in its simplest functions and in its most everyday places. It highlights the technological revolutions of written communication and offers an itinerary called Fiume delle Scritture, which traces the evolution of signs and characters. Three rooms display printing presses.
Local marginal writings, such as those of shepherds and graffiti, receive particular attention and are presented both inside and outside the museum. The thematic rooms explore autobiographical written and oral memory, marks of ownership and the difficult relationship with reading and writing; the visit is completed by an educational workshop and an auditorium.
